Redfin asked White Maple Construction co-founder Ryan Brining what homeowners should know before refinishing hardwood floors. Ryan said refinishing 500 square feet of hardwood in average condition typically runs about $2,000 to $3,000, with stairs and railings priced separately.

He also warned that the existing color matters. And on additions where new flooring meets existing floors, Ryan explained that replacing a larger section often looks better than patching in a seam that shows.
